Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. –Marva Collin

Grandparents Day is Coming...

Andie counts sixteen friends in our circle. We are missing Daniel, but he will be back just in time for lunch! We wished him well at his appointment. Andie writes “Nature” on our calendar.

T:

Let’s talk a little bit about tomorrow and what it is going to look like. You might see chairs in our block area, our kitchen… all over our classroom! It is going to be a different day but also one of the best days! There is an important conversation we have been wanting to have, and it is especially important to have this conversation before tomorrow’s event. Think about how many days we have been in school. Let’s take a look at our calendar. We have been in school for 7 months! That is WAY over 100 days of school. Would you consider yourselves to be experts in this classroom? What makes you an expert in room 103?

Alex:

Because I listen to rules.

Caroline:

How quietly I can walk in the hall.

Quinn:

Doing my jobs. T: What is a job that you feel proud of? Quinn: Being the classroom manager.

Griffin:

My jobs.

Andie:

When we clean up nicely.

Ashton:

Finding clues.

T:

Boys and girls, after today, there are only 27 days left in school. Here is what Miss Kopp and I have been noticing. We have been noticing that some of you have been forgetting very important rules in our classroom. Rules keep us safe. They are there to protect not only ourselves, but our materials in our classroom. It is taking 2, 3 even 4 messages for us to listen. When you get to Kindergarten or Jr. Kindergarten, how many messages will be given? Only one! Tomorrow… There are going to be so many people in our classroom that it might be extra hard to have great listening ears. What are some things we need to remember for tomorrow? At my house, when we have guests over, we remember to use our extra good behavior.

Troy:

No knocking down buildings with stop signs.

T:

There will be a lot of people in our classroom. What happens if something accidentally gets knocked over? It will be okay because sometimes those things happen when we have a crowded classroom.

Alex:

Always be kind to others. T: How can we show kindness tomorrow and every day? Alex: Sharing. T: Sharing materials. Absolutely.

Gwen:

Always help a person who fell over get back up. T: Hopefully no one falls over tomorrow. Gwen: Yeah and hopefully no one falls over on somebody else.

Caroline:

No playing on the ladder.

T:

Right! We should not be hanging or swinging on our ladder. We don’t have something soft under it to keep us from getting hurt if we fall down.

Josephine:

Be kind to each other.

Griffin:

If your building falls, don’t cry. T: Yes, know that you have many more days to create another building.

Troy:

This rule is to keep you safe. My mom always tells me when I have to clean up and I am so tired I have to clean it up. Cause my mom wants me to do that. T: Right. If we didn’t clean up and things are all over the floor…

Caroline:

We would trip!

Camille:

Do not hit!

Caroline:

Yeah, my grandma would of course fall over.

T:

Right. We don’t want that to happen! I want to talk about our day tomorrow. Some parts will be different, and some will be the same. Moms and dads are going to drop off just like normal. You will not pick your lunch because you won’t be eating lunch here tomorrow! You will play in the classroom until it is time to gather at the carpet. We are going to wait to do our morning meeting for the grandparents and special friends to see. Then we are going to read a book about grandparents. And then… do you know who gets to pick worktime on our smart board tomorrow? Your grandparents! What do you think they will pick?

Andie:

My grandma loves board games but we don’t have any.

T:

THEY are going to pick worktime. What are the rules of worktime that we are going to have to teach our grandparents about? Nathaniel, if Nana and Papa pick the studio, can they move to the blocks?

Students:

No!

T:

After worktime, we are going to ring the bell, and we are going to do something fun with the grandparents. We are going to read Caps for Sale! And you are all going to do the Caps for Sale play. Just like we would at a celebration. Now, what if you really wanted to be the peddler but someone else gets chosen?

Cian:

You just think about it for a little bit and then you just forget!

T:

You can just say, you know what, I am going to have fun being the monkey.

T:

After Caps for Sale, we are going to do a fun scavenger hunt with our grandmas, grandpas, and special friends. From the playground, after the scavenger hunt, most of you will be leaving with your special guests.

T:

Now, something to remember is some of the special guests that are here for you tomorrow also have other people they have to visit in the school. For example, Nathaniel’s Nana and Papa also have to visit his brother, Theo, in 3rd grade. And Ashton’s Aunt Becky and Aunt Linda also have Ethan and Josh’s classrooms to visit. So, are we going to get upset when your guest doesn’t show up right away? Know that they will be here as soon as possible, and we are going to have fun until they get here!
