Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. –Marva Collin

Story Writing Begins...

Naomi counts fifteen friends in our circle.  Camille and Alex are missing.  We wish them well!

T:  Raise your hand if you noticed what was new on our Work Time yesterday…

Gwen: Markers and paper!

Caroline: Where you write!

Nathaniel: It was a new area!

T: This was just markers and paper, how is this different from the Studio?

Naomi: The studio has glue!

T: On our Smart Board, there are words above each area.  Above the new picture, it says “Story Writing.”  What does that mean?

Naomi:  Something that you read or write and can give to people.

T:  Josephine's mom read two stories to us this morning. What do you see in a story?

Ashton: Characters!

Quinn: There are letters inside of it.

Andie: You can go up to the library and look at the books or ask someone to read to you.

T:  Who writes a story?

Naomi: An author!

T: We all will be authors this year! Isn’t that amazing?  Did you know that you would become an author in Room 103?  What would you write about?

Gwen: A snowman!

Griffen: Toad and Mario jumping on a mushroom!

T: If you could write a story what would it be, Caroline?

Caroline: The Grinch took everyone’s Santa cookies! And he took all of the milk and all the ornaments and then a little girl came downstairs and kicked the Grinch out!

Andie: A snowman story! When the snowman was sleeping and then it went outside to play.

Forest: A school bus in snow! The school bus was driving and then it snowed and it was all on the street and the busses wheels got stuck, the kids were sleeping on the bus!

T:  These are all fantastic stories!  This area will be open today!

Gwen: Markers and paper!

T: You will begin by drawing an illustration.  An illustration will help you plan your ideas.  Here is an example: ( I draw a house with windows and a chimney) Raise a quiet hand and tell me what do you see in the picture…

Troy:  A door, windows, and a chimney. It’s a house!

T:  What would your story be about if you drew something like this?

Troy:  I think that this story is about the Titanic.

Ashton: A human went into the house and wolves come out and the human ran into the house!

T:  I’m going to draw something else (a snowman and a sun).  What could this story could this be about?

Luke: There is a snowman and a sun!

Gwen: A snowman was walking, and the sun came out and the snowman melted and the people who made it were really sad.

T:  Your first job in this area is to draw.  Make sure you add lots of details to your illustrations… characters in your story, where the story takes place… what if you were creating a story about a shark… what might be in my illustration?

Gwen: That would be Luke’s story!

Andie: Water!

Naomi: The shark!

Caroline: Teeth!
