Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. –Marva Collin

Partner Portraits

Josephine counts fifteen friends in our circle.  Gwen and Caroline are missing.  We wish them well!  She writes “M” on our calendar for Music.

T:

Let’s take our fingers and make an M on the ground. M says Mmmmm! M says Mmmmm! Can we think of any other words besides music that begin with the letter M? I see someone coming in right now whose name starts with an M! Matt, Camille’s dad!

Forest:

Maren!

T:

Yes! We have Music, Matt, Maren…

Daniel:

Nicholas.

T:

Nicholas starts with an N, which is very similar to M. They are right next to each other in the alphabet! Daniel, there is someone else in your family that starts with an M!

Daniel:

Mom.

T:

Yes, and your dad’s first name, Michael!

Naomi:

Mattress!

Nathaniel:

Mystery reader!

Alex:

Mystery reader.

T:

What do you drink at lunch that is white? It sometimes gives you a white mustache….

Students:

Milk!

T:

What comes up in the sky at night?

Camille:

Moon!

T:

We have completed one self-portrait in our classroom so far this year. What is a self-portrait?

Naomi:

It’s where you draw yourself. T: Right, and what parts of yourself do you draw?

Andie:

Head.

Camille:

Body.

Griffin:

Eye.

Forest:

Mouth.

Josephine:

Arms.

Nathaniel:

Head.

Cian:

Hair.

T:

If your name is Ashton stand up. If your name is Josephine stand up. How might they be the same?

Forest:

They have buttons.

T:

They both have buttons on their shirt!

Camille:

Feet.

T:

Ashton, how many feet do you have? Josephine, how many feet do you have? They both have 2 feet!

Andie:

Noses.

Naomi:

Eyes.

T:

What is the same about their eyes?

Naomi:

They are both blue.

T:

Troy, what is different about them?

Troy:

My eyes are brown. They are not wearing the same color.

T:

How would Ashton draw himself differently?

Troy:

He would have to draw his red shirt and his shoes and his hair and all sorts of his body.

T:

What about Josephine?

Troy:

Her dress. And her hair.

Daniel:

They will have to draw their ears.

Camille:

Their clothes are different.

T:

Ashton, what’s different about you?

Ashton:

I am wearing red and she is wearing pink.

Josephine:

I am wearing pink and he is wearing red.

Griffin:

They have different shoes.

Alex:

Their eyes are different. And she has long hair and he has short hair.

Camille:

Hers is curly and his is straight.

T:

All of these differences are what makes all of you special. To celebrate that, we are going to start a really cool project. It is called partner portraits. What is a partner portrait?

Alex:

Someone just like you.

Camille:

Maybe you would ask someone to sit still, and you would try to draw their body and their hair.

T:

Right, Camille! Boys and girls, you are going to pick a partner and draw them! If my partner was Alexander, would I draw his hair long like mine?

Students:

No!

T:

What might I draw for his shirt?

Ashton:

Scary things.

T:

Yes, I would draw a pumpkin because he has a pumpkin on his shirt!

Andie:

Quinn and Griffin’s shoes match.

T:

What else is different or the same about Griffin and Quinn?

Andie:

Their eyes. Griffin’s are brown and Quinn’s are blue.

Alex:

Cian, we both have black and white spots!

Cian:

Yeah!
