Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. –Marva Collin

Playground Games!

Alex counts sixteen friends in our circle.  Luke is missing.  We wish him well and hope he is having fun at the beach!  She writes “M” on our calendar for Music.

T:

Today is smile day! Let’s talk about smile day. Forest, what is smile day?

Forest:

We were getting stickers! Happy faces.

Alex:

I got stickers.

Naomi:

I got a stickers and Cole also got one.

Andie:

I practiced that song at my house. T: The days of the week song? Andie: Yeah!

T:

Ashton, stand up! You are wearing the perfect shirt for smile day.

Gwen:

I got a pink one first, then a yellow one.

Cian:

I got a sticker too but now I lost it.

T:

What is smile day, anyway?

Alex:

It’s a day where everyone smiles.

Troy:

I didn’t get any.

T:

You may have come in a different way.

Caroline:

I think smile day is to have fun and not do anything wrong.

T:

Boys and girls, when you got a sticker, did you frown? I noticed when we asked Forest if he got a sticker, he smiled! It made him feel happy. Just something small can make you smile. Do you know of any other small ways to make someone smile?

T:

I came out to play on the playground with you yesterday. Something was happening that was really interesting. A friend came up to me going “AHHH.” *Making a scared face* Because they were being chased. Raise your hand if you play chasing games on the playground.

Gwen:

Bayla chases me. She runs super fast.

Caroline:

I chase Margot. She is a Margot kitty and I pretend she is my kitty and I chase her.

Naomi:

Me and Daphne play tag with Alexander.

Camille:

Malik and Kevin chase me around on the playground.

T:

Your face kind of looked like you don’t like them chasing you.

Camille:

I don’t.

T:

If I am playing the chasing game, and I am running after people, how do I know that people are playing my chasing game?

Gwen:

They run away.

Caroline:

They run like super duper fast. Like a movie.

Camille:

Cause they told you.

T:

Here’s the important thing that I don’t know. How do I know if they are not playing my chasing game?

Alexander:

They might say no.

T:

If I am chasing someone, and they tell me no, what should I do?

Caroline:

Stop.

T:

Right, someone might not like the chasing game.

T:

How else might I know if they are not playing?

Daniel:

You can ask them, and if they say no, then maybe you could just go ask another kid.

Griffin:

Um, if you want to, you could play all by yourself.

T:

Let’s pretend that Miss Buzzi and I were playing a chasing game, and Miss Buzzi was a monster, and she was chasing me, but I was scared and didn’t really want to play? What would I have to do?

Cian:

Say no please I don’t like that.

T:

What should Miss Buzzi do?

Students:

Stop!

Naomi:

Maybe say, Miss Buzzi, I want to play something else.

T:

If you are on the playground, and someone is chasing you, you can just stop! Can someone chase you if you are standing still?

Students:

No.

T:

Right! You can just stop and say, no thank you, I do not want to be chased.

T:

What about playing games like superheroes? What are some of the things that superheroes do?

Camille:

They have to have a cape on. I have a green one.

Griffin:

They run.

T:

Are there bad guys?

Students:

Yeah.

Caroline:

If you are too scared to play, you can just walk away, and you find someone else to play a different game.

T:

Raise your hand if you have ever been a bad guy outside. Is it always scary to be a bad guy? What if you want to play superheroes but you don’t want there to be a bad guy?

Caroline:

You just pretend there are no villains.

T:

What does pretend mean? Does it mean it’s real?

Gwen:

 No.

Camille:

No.

T:

If I am battling a villain, should I go like this? Should I pull Andie’s shirt? Grab her leg? Tug her body?

Students:

No!

T:

But could I pretend?

Students:

Yeah!

T:

If I had a superpower, I could go like this. I can pretend I am throwing my ice blasting powers on Andie.

T:

Miss Kopp and I are going to pretend we are playing superheroes. Miss Kopp is going to be the villain. She is going to use pretend superpowers on me.

Miss Kopp:

Pew pew pew!

T:

*Makes scared face and Miss Kopp continues to pretend play*.

T:

When I make a face, does Miss Kopp know I don’t want to play? No! What if I use my words and say, Miss Kopp I don’t like that! Please stop. Then, she would know, and she would stop! When you are scared and you don’t want to play a certain game, you need to use your words.
