Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. –Marva Collin

Picking Pumpkins!

Nathaniel counts sixteen friends in our circle. Luke is missing.  We wish him well!  He writes “S” and “L” on our calendar for Swim and Library.

T:

Today is going to be a little different when it is time for library. Mrs. Hartrich is coming to our classroom! In the library, they are having something called a book fair. So, the library is a little crowded this week. Mrs. Hartrich is bringing us new books today when she comes! I bet she will bring lots of Halloween books.

There is also something else that we need to do that we have been waiting for since last May. That is a long time! Some of you were 3! That was (let’s count on our calendar) 6 months ago. I am going to draw something on our calendar to give you a hint. What did I draw? (Draws a fully grown pumpkin)

Quinn:

It’s Halloween!

Camille:

The Halloween parade.

T:

Right, the ECP costume parade is next week, but have we been planning our costumes for 6 months? Something happened in May that I have been waiting for for a long time. And so have some students in Kindergarten and Jr. Kindergarten. Would you like another clue? 6 months ago, it didn’t look like that, it looked like this. What is this? (Draws pumpkin seeds)

Camille:

Pumpkin seeds!

T:

I will give you another hint. In May, this is what we did. (Draws picture of a pot with seeds)

Gwen:

Planting! Planting pumpkin seeds.

T:

Right. They have been growing and growing and growing.

Daniel:

They are here! On the playground.

T:

Those pumpkins on the playground belong to room 103. Our job today is to go outside and pick the pumpkins! You all have done such a great job being careful around the pumpkins and stepping around them to keep them safe. Today, we are going to cut the pumpkins, so they have a little stem and put them on our windowsill. We will admire them for a bit, and then cut them open to see what is inside! Friends, why do you think it took so long for the pumpkins to get here?

Cian:

They are going to be a little pokey. One time it hurt my hand.

T:

Well, I am going to use scissors, and we will cut the pumpkin and pick it up by the round part so we won’t get poked. Pumpkins only start as little seeds and it takes a lot of time and care for the pumpkins to grow big! Just like you!

Alex:

It’s pumpkin time!

T:

Can all of us have a pumpkin? I think there are three pumpkins. Can everybody carry them today? Students: No. T: Nathaniel, how many friends did you count today?

Nathaniel:

16.

T:

Is 16 bigger or smaller than three?

Students:

Bigger!
